Professing to be Wise, They Became Foolish

The exact Bible verse from Romans 1:22 reads: "Professing to be wise, they became fools". We can take this concept and apply it to the parable of the ten virgins from Matt 26. 5 were wise and 5 were foolish, and the foolish ones did not realize or know they were fools. This should be terrifying to each of us.

How did they become fools?

Jesus warned us 4 times in the Olivet discourse (Matt 24) not to be deceived and included the elect in this warning.( Matt 24:24 ) In these post modern times many preachers twist and distort scriptures creating new doctrines that must appear wise to them, but are foolish, insulting the very God they profess to worship. Some even teach their flock that Jesus is here, now, with new revelation that supersedes what we know from scripture. They instruct people to ignore the very words of Jesus, teaching the precepts of men. We saw this in Jesus' time. In Matt 15:7-9 Jesus accuses the Pharisees of "teaching as Doctrines the precepts of men" citing it as a prophecy of Isaiah, telling them their worship is in vain. This is explained in John 4:24 "God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. "

Professing to be wise, they become fools

Some even teach their flock to ignore the writings of the Old Testament or end time prophecy, ignoring the fact that the New Testament points to the old and vice versa, as we saw in the previous paragraph. The Old Testament contains information for our time, just as it did for the first coming of Jesus.

Jesus told us to be alert, be ready ( Matt 24:42). He is coming like a thief in the night ( 1 Thess 5:2) and those who are wise will keep their relationship with Him close, observing the warnings contained in the Bible. The wise will look up as their redemption draws nigh (Luke 21:28)

We see an excellent example in the early church of those who thought they were wise, become fools. Paul exhorted the Galatians in chapter 3:1 "You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you" He then teaches us further by his words in versus 2-3: "This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish, having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? " When we look at John 14:26 we see that Paul reminded them what Jesus taught: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your memory all that I have said to you." In the Bible, the epistles brought this to us for our instruction, having the Spirit guide what was to be written.

The Galatians chapter continues, indicating that those who belong to Jesus are no longer under the law. These are the wise. The foolish have fallen back under the law, for which they will be required to defend their actions in the great white throne judgement. (Rev 20: 11-12) When we leave the simplicity of the only true Gospel, do we not take on the precepts of men?

Today, tragically there is much damage done from preachers and teachers who have forgotten that Jesus is the Word in flesh (John chapter 1). By distorting scripture they distort Him and being in an authoritative position, lead people astray. The fools lead the fools, the blind leading the blind. This is very serious and can be a deciding factor, are you one of the wise or are you one of the foolish virgins.... pray that you are wise.
